Contextual Studies

This part of the Programme aims to provide a base from which you can
acquire subject knowledge relevant to teaching as well as explore issues central to the teaching of core curriculum subjects.

The Image of the Human Being derived from Anthroposophy
These modules consider the Image of the Human Being derived from Anthroposophy and the way it informs the Steiner Waldorf curriculum and methodology. The module has as its focus sessions on Gymnastics and Games together with Eurythmy, a movement art embodying ‘visible music and visible speech’. A core element of this module involves a programme of study on the Evolution of Consciousness through History of Art & Culture. A course on Physiology, linked to Steiner’s core lecture course, ‘The Foundations of Human Experience’ will also be offered.

Subject Studies
These modules have a focus on subjects with a practical ‘hands-on’orientation. You will study aspects of the Science Curriculum and look at ways in which children can be taught through experiement and on field trips. There are residential workshops led by the Hiram Trust where you will be introduced to aspects of the craft curriculum. Painting, Drawing and Modelling for the Lower School will also be practised. in order to develop subject knowledge and pedagogical skills relevant to particular disciplines.
In addition to the above subject areas, tutors from the Faculty of Education will offer a mainstream perspective on a variety of subject areas.
